Overview
We would love you to join our community endeavor to make High School Park an oasis of natural beauty in our neighborhood. As a volunteer organization, we rely on members of the neighborhood, schools, congregations, youth and community service groups to achieve our mission. Volunteering is a great way to meet people in your community, and learn about native plant restoration and gardening with native plants. Plus you get the added bonus of literally getting to watch your volunteer efforts grow! Below are the different ways you can volunteer and make a difference in our park.
Ways To Volunteer
NEW! Adopt a Plot!
You can now adopt your own a 10’ by 10’ plot in High School Park to care for. If each member adopted a plot and kept invasive plants at bay and helped us replace them by planting native plants the work of many hands would make for light work year round by all.
Email Diana K. Weiner at info@fhsp.org or call 215-782-8082 to tour the park and pick your special plot today.
Weekday Work Days
Weekday Work Days are available. Email Diana K. Weiner at info@fhsp.org to volunteer.
Winter Office Help
Office Help is needed during the winter at our new office at 7910 Montgomery Avenue. Email Diana K. Weiner at info@fhsp.org or call 215-782-8082 to volunteer.
Arts in the Park
This arts and music festival at the park draws up to 3 thousand people from the community to shop from 50 jury-selected local artists, while enjoying local bands and choirs, partaking in children's crafts, shopping at the plant sale, or sampling the many different food fares offered by vendors. Arts in the Park is held the first Sunday in June, but the planning for this event starts the January before. Every year it takes about 100 volunteers to help obtain sponsors, set-up the booths, tents, sound system and stage, supervise activities, and recruit other volunteers. If you have particular skills that would contribute to the event, or just love meeting and working with like-minded people, please contact Gina Craigo at 215-782-8082 or at info@fhsp.org.
Workdays at the Park
High School Park is an ongoing restoration effort that depends on volunteers to remove invasive plants and replace them with native plants. If you like to garden, be out in a natural environment, get to know people in the community, or want to learn more about native plant restoration, you will enjoy volunteer workdays at the park. These workdays are publicized through our newsletter, website, and e-mail listserve. We are also seeking greater workday participation from schools, congregations, and boy or girl scout troops, and other neighborhood organizations.
To participate in workdays in the park or to help us do more outreach to get volunteers for our workdays, contact Diana K. Weiner at 215-782-8082 or at info@fhsp.org.
Park Restoration and Management (PRAM) Committee
We have a plan for restoring High School Park, but we need help managing this endeavor. The PRAM Committee plans and supervises workdays. We would love volunteers for this committee that have some plant/gardening knowledge, or interest in learning about native plant restoration. Contact Diana K. Weiner at 215-782-8082 or at info@fhsp.org to find out more.
Finance Committee
To raise the funds needed to carry out our restoration goals for the park, we need people to help with our fundraising appeals to membership and the local business community, as well as to seek out and help write grant applications. If you think you can help in any of these activities please contact Gina Craigo at 215-782-8082 or at info@fhsp.org.
Communications Committee
This committee oversees our communications, which includes a bi-yearly newsletter, press releases and flyers to promote our events, a website, signage within the park, and other initiatives to help generate awareness of the Friends of High School Park activities, or educate visitors about the park. If you have experience or interest in working in this area, we would love to have you join us. Please contact Gina Craigo at 215-782-8082 or at info@fhsp.org.
